Article Types

 



Original Articles

Original articles are reports of clinical or laboratory investigations or case series of direct relevance to dental sleep medicine. Original articles are also general sleep medicine investigations that have relevance to dental sleep medicine practitioners and researchers. 

  1. Typically, original articles will contain new data derived from a series of patients or subjects.
  2. There are no minimum length requirements for original articles. In general, original articles should not exceed 5,000 words.
  3. A structured abstract of no more than 250 words is required.
  4. References should be limited to no more than 50.
  5. The structured abstract, references, tables and figures are not included in the 5,000-word limit.
  6. Original articles should include no more than eight tables and figures.
  7. The submission should follow JDSM guidelines for submission and formatting.


Review Articles

Review articles usually bring together important information on a topic of general interest to a dental sleep medicine practitioner. Authors who have ideas for such articles are advised to contact the Editor-in-Chief at hmontague@aadsm.org to ensure that a similar work has not already been submitted. 

  1. Reviews are not intended to be a forum for the presentation of new data.
  2. The main text of the review should not exceed 7,500 words.
  3. A structured abstract of no more than 250 words is required.
  4. The structured abstract, references, tables and figures are not included in the 7,500-word limit.
  5. The submission should follow JDSM guidelines for submission and formatting.

Case Reports

Case reports present unique, unusual or important clinical observations of interest to dental sleep medicine practitioners. 

  1. Case reports should be organized with the following sections: Introduction, report of case, discussion, references and table/figure.
  2. An unstructured abstract of no more than 150 words is required.
  3. No more than one table. Up to 8 figures may be included. 
  4. The submission should follow JDSM guidelines for submission and formatting.

Practice Management:

Practice Management articles focus on how to effectively run a dental sleep medicine office. Topics may include: dental economics, insurance and reimbursement, coding and billing, referrals, marketing and networking, staffing issues, etc. 
 
  1. The article (not including title, references, tables or figures) must be limited to 1,500 words or less.
  2. The article should be organized into sections: an introduction, a discussion (optional: separated by title headers that indicate a topical shift), a conclusion and references. Abstracts are not needed for this submission.
  3. Practice management articles should include no more than eight tables and figures.
  4. The submission should follow JDSM guidelines for submission and formatting.

Sleep Team Perspectives:

Sleep Team Perspectives focus on how dentists and other clinicians and clinical staff may work together to treat sleep-related breathing disorders. We welcome perspectives from physicians, dental hygienists and other staff, sleep technologists and other non-dental practitioners. 
 
  1. The article (not including title, references, tables or figures) must be limited to 1,500 words or less.
  2. The article should be organized into sections: an introduction, a discussion (optional: separated by title headers that indicate a topical shift), a conclusion and references. Abstracts are not needed for this submission.
  3. Sleep team perspectives articles should include no more than eight tables and figures.
  4. The submission should follow JDSM guidelines for submission and formatting.

Pro/Con Debates:

Pro/con debates focus on an issue of controversy withing dental sleep medicine, and provide two differing perspectives on that issue. Debates should include a brief description of the issue, a pro written by one author and a con written by a second author. 
 
  1. The article (not including title, references, tables or figures) must be limited to 3,000 words (~1500 words per author) or less.
  2. The article should be organized into sections: an introduction, a pro, a con, a conclusion and references.
  3. Abstracts are not needed for this submission.
  4. Pro/con debates should include no more than eight tables and figures.
  5. The submission should follow JDSM guidelines for submission and formatting.

Letters to the Editor

Brief letters (maximum of 1000 words, including references; no tables or figures) will be considered if they include the notation “for publication.” A letter must be signed by all of its authors. Case reports should not be submitted as letters, but rather as formal case reports. Letters commenting on an article published in JDSM must be received within 10 weeks of the article’s publication. Letters received after the deadline will not be considered for publication. Accepted letters will be sent to the authors of the original manuscript for reply. Such letters must include the title and author of the manuscript and the month and year of publication. Letters that do not meet these specifications will be returned unreviewed. JDSM will notify authors about the disposition of their letters.

Special Reports

JDSM will consider for publication manuscripts in other areas as special reports. These include medical, political or economic commentary; perspectives on the history of medicine; and technical considerations in oral appliance therapy. Authors are advised to contact the Editor-in-Chief at hmontague@aadsm.org to discuss their concepts for these manuscripts before submitting.
