Virend K. Somers, MBChB, DPhil, is a cardiologist and a Mayo Clinic Distinguished Investigator in the Department of Cardiovascular Diseases at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He is recognized with the distinction of a named Mayo professorship, the Alice Sheets Marriott Professorship. Dr. Somers earned his medical degree at the University of Natal in South Africa. He received an Oxford Nuffield Medical Fellowship to Oxford University where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy degree. He then completed a residency in internal medicine and a cardiology fellowship at the University of Iowa. His H-index is 111 with >70,000 citations.
