Premera policy: AADSM influences OAT coverage decision

American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine

AADSM opposition influenced Premera Blue Cross Blue Shield, the largest health plan in Washington and Alaska, to reevaluate its policy that would have required OSA patients to fail a prefabricated oral appliance before qualifying for a custom-fitted dental appliance. AADSM provided evidence-based publications to campaign for best practices in oral appliance therapy, and Premera updated its policy in November to remove the "boil and bite" requirement.

As insurance companies make decisions about dental sleep medicine reimbursement, we will continue to advocate for AADSM members and position oral appliance therapy for success.
