Dear AADSM Members,
It's my pleasure to announce that in 2017 the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) will begin offering a "Qualified Dentist" designation to help you promote your knowledge of dental sleep medicine to sleep physicians, patients and payers. You will be able to earn and maintain the Qualified Dentist designation, as a free member benefit, by completing 25 hours of recognized continuing education in dental sleep medicine in the last two years.
This new designation was established in recognition that payers and referring physicians increasingly require evidence of clinical competency from dentists who practice dental sleep medicine. Although board certification and facility accreditation are excellent options for demonstrating your professional expertise, they take time and substantial experience to obtain.
As an Academy, we recognize that thousands of dentists who are still on the path to certification and accreditation are skilled in dental sleep medicine and need a way to showcase their knowledge. The Qualified Dentist designation is an attainable form of recognition for AADSM members that will help position your practice for growth.
Beginning in January 2017, the AADSM will start accepting applications for the Qualified Dentist designation and will acknowledge it in the online "Find a Dentist" directory of AADSM members. In 2018 the AADSM will transition the "Find a Dentist" directory to display contact information only for those AADSM members who are a Qualified Dentist, a Diplomate of an AADSM-recognized board, or the dental director of a facility accredited by an AADSM-recognized non-profit organization.
I encourage you to learn more about the Qualified Dentist designation on the AADSM website.
The Qualified Dentist designation will help you thrive in an increasingly competitive and frequently changing health care landscape. I'm proud of the foresight of our Academy to establish this much-needed designation, and I encourage you to learn more about how you can prepare now to submit an application in 2017.
