AADSM Addresses Boil and Bite Devices with State Medical Boards

American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine
Thursday, February 11, 2016

The Board of Directors recently sent letters to each state medical board to bring to their attention the concern that some physicians are providing non-custom oral appliances for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The letter expressed caution about the inferiority of these “boil and bite” devices, and it reiterated that qualified dentists are the provider of choice for oral appliance therapy. Leveraging the research and recommendations in the AADSM and AASM Clinical Practice Guideline, the Academy urged the medical boards to notify their licensees that the provision of an oral appliance by a physician is an unacceptable patient care strategy.
