President’s Message: Fostering Growth in Dental Sleep Medicine

American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine
Friday, May 15, 2015

Dear AADSM Members,

As president of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), it is my privilege to keep you informed of the direction of the organization. I’m happy to report a spike in membership for 2015 – showing the growing importance of the field of dental sleep medicine and the overall success of our association.

To foster continued growth, the board of directors has implemented several initiatives to strengthen the position of the AADSM within the sleep medicine community, including finalizing a new clinical practice guideline in conjunction with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The updated recommendations will demonstrate to physicians, patients and payors that many dentists are well versed in oral appliance therapy and will ultimately strengthen the physician-dentist relationship within dental sleep medicine. The clinical guideline will be published in July in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.

Public relations is another way we are fostering our growth. Did you know that 45 percent of women said they worry about the health of their bed partner when he snores? We conducted a survey that revealed this and many other startling statistics on the effect of snoring on bed partners’ sleep. We used these findings to support a highly successful national media push and social media campaign in the first half of 2015. And more PR efforts will follow as we kick off another three-year program in June. More detailed PR campaign updates are available on the AADSM website.

Finally, as June is quickly approaching, I encourage all of you to consider attending the AADSM 24th Annual Meeting, which will be held in Seattle from June 4–6. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in educational sessions led by a number of world-renowned experts, see the most current technology available, gain insights on changes in billing and reimbursement, and develop strategies to overcome the latest clinical challenges. More information can be found on the Annual Meeting page on the AADSM website.

I am looking forward to learning from you and with you in Seattle!

Sincerely,

Kathleen Bennett, DDS
President
