President's Update: An Introduction

American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine
Tuesday, July 15, 2014

For the next two years I have the honor of serving you, my colleagues and friends, as president of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM). I look forward to working with the other members of the Board of Directors to launch new initiatives and turn challenges into opportunities during my term.

One of these opportunities is to continue our national public relations campaign, which is raising awareness of oral appliance therapy as an effective treatment option for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  Our campaign also is positioning the Academy’s members as the experts who have the solution that patients desperately need. The second year of our public relations campaign focused on the benefits of oral appliance therapy and produced tremendous results. In the year ahead we will build on this success by conveying to the public the advantages of living with oral appliance therapy.

Another opportunity is to help our members navigate the fast and furious changes occurring within our health care system. Nationwide health care reform is having a dramatic impact on patient access to medical care, and the diagnostic and therapeutic paradigm for obstructive sleep apnea is changing rapidly. As a result, an increasing number of people with suspected sleep apnea are being screened, diagnosed and prescribed treatment. The prospects for the continued growth of dental sleep medicine are great as we continue to collaborate with our physician colleagues to ensure that every sleep apnea patient receives effective, long-term treatment.

As president I recognize the importance of keeping lines of communication open between the Board of Directors and the membership. Therefore, in addition to the AADSM monthly NewsFlash emails that provide members with timely updates and alerts, I will be writing quarterly messages after every Board of Directors meeting. My goal is to keep you informed of the direction of the organization while notifying you of future projects that will help us achieve our mission to advance the dentist’s role in the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing.

It is a privilege to be your president, and I look forward to updating you throughout the year on the latest AADSM initiatives.

Sincerely,

Kathleen Bennett, DDS
President
